Recent data confirm the ongoing tourism recovery in Germany. Compared to the previous year, there has been a significant increase in the number of foreign guests staying in German hotels overnight. However, the overall demand is still below the pre-covid level.

Although the number of overnight stays has risen, tourism in Germany has yet to reach the pre- Coronavirus crisis level as of March.

According to data from the Federal Statistical Office, hotels, guesthouses, and other properties with at least ten beds reported 31.8 million overnight stays by domestic and foreign guests in March. That was 26.5 percent more than in March 2022, which was still partly impacted by Corona-related restrictions.

For example, trade fairs and large events were prohibited in most federal states until late spring 2022. Compared to March 2019, the month before the pandemic, a minus of 3.7 percent overnight stays was recorded.

The number of overnight stays by domestic travelers came close to pre-crisis levels, with 26.7 million stays recorded, only a 1.1% decrease. However, cross-border tourism in Germany experienced a decline, with 5.1 million overnight stays by foreign visitors, 15% drop compared to March 2019. Compared to March 2022, however, the number of overnight stays in international tourism is much higher at 53.4%, whereas in domestic tourism, it only increased by 22.4%.
