Rondo’s upcoming Ioon gravel ebike looks a lot like their latest second-generation Ruut gravel bike, maybe giving a bit more explanation for that bike’s unique oversized aesthetics. But it’s not quite an exact replica with a motor added. The new Rondo Ioon neatly integrates a Fazua ebike drive system into the carbon frame, although it required some downtube reshaping and even slightly closing-in the Ruut’s interrupted seattube design.

Details are slim, but what do we know?

What first grabbed our attention a couple of years ago with Rondo’s complete Ruut’s gravel bike redesign was the curious rear triangle design. – breaking the continuity of the conventional seattube, and resulting in a frame of 2 trapezoids, instead of 2 classic triangles. But while that unique new design introduced some rear-end-flexing comfort that I could actually feel when riding the new Ruut 2.0, the boxy oversized front end felt stiff and maybe even a bit overbuilt.

Now, that I see a 5kg heavier ebike version with a motor and battery tucked into its downtube, I can maybe start to understand why that front end stiffness might have already been there waiting.

What’s new?

What’s new is that Rondo has not made an ebike before. And so their new Ioon aims to break into an all-new market for the Polish bike company.

We’ve already covered a number of carbon gravel ebikes fitted with lightweight Fazua system, including the Cervélo Rouvida, Cyklaer E-Gravel, Look E-765, Pinarello Nytro & Santa Cruz Skitch. But the new Ioon does appear to deviate the least from its analog Ruut counterpart.

(Just to be clear about its name – Rondo alternately refer to it in all uppercase IOON and lowercase ioon, as a part of ‘gravel revolutioon‘, which maybe also suggests how we are supposed to say its name. And we’ll try not to confuse it with any waterfowl.)

This upcoming Rondo Ioon is powered by a lightweight and smooth-powered Fazua Ride 60 mid-drive ebike system. That integrates the combined 60Nm/max 450W motor unit and internal 430Wh battery into the frame, extending from the bottom bracket up the lower side of the carbon downtube. The result is that the Ioon’s downtube is the same depth as the latest Ruut, but now appears to be completely round instead of an angular aero shape.

Rondo locates the Fazua charging port into the lower spar of the seattube. And it appears they needed a bit more internal frame volume, as there’s a new extension that partially fills in the gap towards the rear tire between seat & chainstays. Interestingly, the Fazua Ride 60 motor itself does not need this space, so it likely has more to do with room for the system’s control wiring and connectors.

Rondo describes the new performance-focused Ioon as a “groundbreaking electric gravel bike” serving their goal of “redefining the experience of gravel riding“. Carrying over the same boxy design styling that has come to define many new Rondo bikes, the Ioon certainly blurs the lines a bit more between pedal-powered and pedal-assist bikes.

We’ll be curious to see if later this year there’s much more to this new gravel ebike than we’ve already surmised.

Rondo Ioon gravel ebike – Pricing & availability

For now Rondo is mostly staying tight-lipped regarding more concrete details about their new Ioon introduction into the gravel ebike market.

But we do know that this build (or at least something quite close to it) should retail for 9999€ and weigh in at approximately 14.7kg complete. They also confirm that the new egravel platform will get an official launch in late spring/early summer, with multiple build options.

Beyond that, Rondo just confirm that the Ioon is “coming soon” and directs us to keep updated with the Ioon’s dedicated landing page – expect availability around early June via their dealer network…
