PARIS TO ESTABLISH QUOTAS TO FIGHT AIRBNB
In certain Paris districts, increasing the number of rental holiday homes will now be prohibited. The aim is to fight Airbnb.
Last week, the City of Paris announced that it would ban new furnished tourist accommodation from professional rental companies in areas of tourist concentration to protect permanent residents from the explosion of Airbnb-type rentals.
"Whole sectors of Paris will be prohibited from the creation of new tourist accommodation because we believe that the offer is already very abundant," explained Emmanuel Grégoire, first deputy mayor of Paris. However, this measure will not apply to owners who occasionally rent out their main residence for up to 120 days per year.
The capital, which officially has 43,000 furnished tourist accommodations – a figure that is largely underestimated according to the town hall – is also hoping for an upcoming legislative regulation of the transformation of offices into furnished tourist accommodations.
According to Dorine Bregman, another manager at the town hall of Paris, one in eight businesses has been transformed into furnished tourist accommodation in the heart of the capital between 2020 and 2022.
In 2021, the Airbnb platform, attacked by the City, was fined 8 million euros for publishing thousands of advertisements without a registration number. According to officials, the regulatory tools are showing their first positive effects with a drop in declared tourist accommodation.
