I got an email the other day from Shaun Maple of the brand Helmet Flair. Shaun is the self-proclaimed “Father of Flair” and someone I was supposed to meet with at Sea Otter this last April. But alas, time got away from me at the event, and I missed the opportunity to meet. I wanted to meet with him because I was interested to learn more about Helmet Flair.

Shaun’s goal/mission at Helmet Flair is simple: “increase helmet use by making the helmets awesome“. To do that, the brand has two product lines that appeal to cyclists, skaters, and motorcycle riders: MagNeatOhz and Softeez.

MagNeatOhz attach to the helmet using a patented magnetic base called Nubbins. This allows users to swap out their flair easily, as well as letting the flair pop off in the case of an impact. The Softeez have a soft foam design that is applied with a peel-and-stick attachment.

Some of the fun designs that you can choose from include cat ears, horns, unicorn horns, and even a banana through the head. All of the products are made in the USA.

Concern is warranted about putting a protruding piece of hard ABS plastic on your helmet (the same goes for cameras and lights). It may be compromising the helmet’s primary design and function. Even if the Flair is designed to pop off the magnetic base upon impact. Personally, for cyclists, I feel the Softeez may be the better choice.
